However, the maintenance, cleaning or adjustment of machinery involves high risks if hazardous energies are not properly controlled.<br\/>In Europe, there is no standard that literally mentions <strong>LOTO<\/strong>, but the legal framework makes it mandatory to apply its principles. <strong>Directive 2009\/104\/EC<\/strong> requires that machines can be safely isolated, and <strong>EN ISO 14118:2018<\/strong>, as a harmonized standard, sets out how these procedures should be implemented: it defines the requirements to avoid unexpected start-ups and regulates the lockout and verification of energies. In practice, this means that implementing a LOTO system is not optional, but the recognized way to comply with the regulations.<br\/>That was precisely the challenge of one of our customers, a leading multinational in its sector within the food industry, which turned to <strong>Prodengroup<\/strong> to take a decisive step in implementing LOTO processes in its packaging lines.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The problem<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The customer had complex machinery in its plants, such as <strong>high-speed vertical packaging machines<\/strong>, with multiple power sources (electric, pneumatic and even self-cleaning CIP fluids).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before starting any intervention &#8211; be it cleaning, adjustment or maintenance &#8211; there was a risk of:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Unexpected movements<\/strong> of rollers, blades or dosing systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accidental release of compressed air or cleaning fluids<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Difficulty of control<\/strong> when several operators intervene at the same time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although emergency stop buttons and interlocked guards were available, they <strong>did not constitute a safe disconnection system<\/strong>, leaving an unacceptable margin of risk.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prodengroup&#8217;s service<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Prodengroup systems for team work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Practical training for operators and technicians.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Training in the application of LOTO in real situations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reinforcement of the preventive culture and shared responsibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The results<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the implementation of the LOTO process, the benefits were immediate:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increased<\/strong> operator <strong>confidence<\/strong> when working on critical machines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reduction of downtime<\/strong> through standardized procedures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Full regulatory compliance<\/strong>, avoiding legal risks and unfavorable audits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2
