href=\"https:\/\/www.une.org\/encuentra-tu-norma\/busca-tu-norma\/norma\/?c=N0075408\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.une.org\/encuentra-tu-norma\/busca-tu-norma\/norma\/?c=N0075408\">EN ISO 13855<\/a> in industrial presses<\/strong> was carried out as part of an action of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/prodengroup.com\/en\/soluciones\/adequa\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/prodengroup.com\/soluciones\/adequa\/\">ADEQUA<\/a><\/strong> area <strong>of <a href=\"https:\/\/prodengroup.com\/en\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/prodengroup.com\/en\/\">PRODEN GROUP<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The intervention was carried out in an industrial facility in the province of <strong>Barcelona<\/strong>, where the implementation of safety barriers presented limitations due to the existing configuration of the machines.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this context, the minimum safety distance obtained by theoretical calculation was excessive for the space available.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Technical context: retrofitting of existing machinery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Real limitations in industrial presses<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In existing machinery, especially in presses, it is common to find geometrical and operational restrictions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, the direct application of normative criteria may result in solutions that are difficult to implement.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, the initial safety distances significantly conditioned the feasibility of the solution.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Need to validate by actual measurement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faced with this situation, a strategy based on the actual measurement of machine behavior was proposed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, it was possible to adjust the calculation of distances based on data obtained under real operating conditions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach is key in industrial retrofit projects.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Methodology applied according to EN ISO 13855<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Measurement of downtime as a critical variable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minimum safety distance depends directly on the total downtime of the system.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.une.org\/encuentra-tu-norma\/busca-tu-norma\/norma\/?c=N0075408\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.une.org\/encuentra-tu-norma\/busca-tu-norma\/norma\/?c=N0075408\">EN ISO 13855<\/a>, this distance is determined by the following expression:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>S = (K \u00d7 T) + C<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>S<\/strong> \u2192 minimum safety distance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>K<\/strong> \u2192 approach velocity of the human body<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>T<\/strong> \u2192 total system downtime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> \u2192 device intrusion distance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, the measurement of downtime becomes a decisive element in the design of the solution.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Downtime measurement on machines according to ISO 13855 with calibrated instrumentation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All measurements were performed with <strong>certified and calibrated equipment<\/strong> suitable for measuring machine downtime according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.une.org\/encuentra-tu-norma\/busca-tu-norma\/norma\/?c=N0075408\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.une.org\/encuentra-tu-norma\/busca-tu-norma\/norma\/?c=N0075408\">ISO 13855<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, specific devices were used for tests on industrial safety systems, including:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>optoelectronic barriers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>double pushbutton systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>safety stop functions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This type of measurements, developed by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/prodengroup.com\/en\/soluciones\/engineering\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/prodengroup.com\/soluciones\/engineering\/\">ENGINEERING<\/a><\/strong> area <strong>of <a href=\"https:\/\/prodengroup.com\/en\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/prodengroup.com\/en\/\">PRODEN GROUP<\/a><\/strong>, allows to obtain real data of the dynamic behavior of the machine.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This ensures the reliability of the results and the technical traceability of the process, especially in retrofit projects where the calculation depends directly on the actual response of the system.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Analysis of the machine-protection system<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measured downtime includes the contribution of different elements:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>press clutch-brake system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>valves and pneumatic elements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>control logic and safety relays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>barrier response time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the variability between equipment, derived from its condition and configuration, was considered.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Results obtained in the presses analyzed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adjustment of distances in Press 1, 2 and 3<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the measurements taken, minimum safety distances were defined for each piece of equipment:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Press 1 \u2192 distance optimized according to actual performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press 2 \u2192 adjustment conditioned by longer stopping time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press 3 \u2192 reduced distance due to lower inertia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These results made it possible to adapt the solution to each machine.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safe reduction of distances<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without measurement, distances obtained by calculation tend to be conservative.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the use of real data allowed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>justifiably reduce distances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ensuring regulatory compliance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>adapting the implementation to the available space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was a determining factor in the viability of the project.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Technical value within the ADEQUA project<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Integration in safety adequacy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measurement was not intended as an isolated study.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was integrated within the adequacy project, allowing the correct definition of the implementation of barriers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, the final solution met both regulatory and operational criteria.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Balance between safety and operations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approach adopted allowed:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>maintain the required level of security<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>avoid oversized solutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>optimize operator-machine interaction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the impact on productivity was minimized.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Economic optimization of the solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to the measurement, complex structural modifications were avoided.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, a solution was achieved:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>technically justified<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>economically viable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consistent with the existing installation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Regulations applied<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project was developed in accordance with:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.une.org\/encuentra-tu-norma\/busca-tu-norma\/norma\/?c=N0075408\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.une.org\/encuentra-tu-norma\/busca-tu-norma\/norma\/?c=N0075408\">EN ISO 13855<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EN ISO 12100<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EN ISO 13849-1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IEC 60204-1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This framework makes it possible to relate the dynamic behavior of the machine to the safety of the solution.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Industrial adaptation based on actual data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In retrofit projects, especially on existing machinery, the theoretical calculation does not always reflect the operational reality.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Downtime measurement in accordance with <a
